There’s little point in living the jet-setting life if you stop short of going to the extreme places it can take you. And then exploring your new habitat as much as possible, reveling in its low places and conquering its higher ones, until it’s time to return to the comforts of home, only to plan the next far-flung excursion.
One great destination to consider is New Zealand, which remains largely unspoiled by man-made activity. Here are a handful of great walks that place the focus on some of the country’s better-known landscapes and locations:
Lake Waikaremoana Walk, Eastland: Explore the magically green environment that encircles Lake Waikaremoana. Experience wetlands, a rainforest and an enchanting “goblin forest.” Located about 40 minutes from Wairoa and 90 minutes from Gisborne, this intermediate-rated trek takes you through the largest region of natural forest on New Zealand’s North Island. The area is the ancestral home of the Maori tribe Ngai Tuhoe, the so-called Children of the Mist. The complete 46 kilometer (28.5 mile) journey can be completed in about 3 to 4 days.
Abel Tasman Coast Track, Nelson (above): This beautiful trip connects many different curved-shaped coves and inlets of Tasman Bay. Beaches of golden-dappled white sand seem to go on forever at times, as do the crystal-clear waters. At 51 kilometers (31.7 miles) this journey will keep the average adventure seeker occupied for anywhere from 3 to 5 days. When the evenings approach, you will have the option of staying in Department of Conservation (DOC) huts and campsites. Or in private lodge-style digs with a tour provider.
Kepler Track, Fiordland (above): Located at the southwest corner of South Island, this jaw-dropping trip has been put together precisely to capture all of the region’s best natural features, including glacier-formed valleys, native forestlands, mountains and waterfalls. The 3- to 4-day expedition, which was opened in 1988, covers some 60 kilometers (37.3 miles).
