Sorona® is an eco-conscious, corn-based biopolymer that reduces energy consumption by 30-40% and greenhouse gas emissions by 55-60% compared to nylon production. Sorona® blends very well with other fibers, and fabrics that use it are very soft, very strong and dry quickly. Learn more about Dupont™ Sorona.®
TENCEL® / MODAL® BLENDS
The ultra-soft Tencel® and Modal® blends have long been the Royal Robbins answer for clothing that delivers performance without the technical appearance of traditional outdoor wear. We blend Tencel® or Modal®, both made from the cellulose in renewably-sourced wood pulp, with other fibers to deliver a refined look that moves from active pursuits to more decorous environments with ease. These garments have a natural drape, dry quickly, and are easy to care for, retaining their color and shape for years.
Tencel® is a highly functional natural fiber extracted from raw eucalyptus wood. Our supplier, Lenzing, sources eucalyptus from responsibly managed forests that have been independently certified by the Soil Association on behalf of the Forest Stewardship Council. By using FSC-certified wood, we’re supporting environmentally appropriate, socially beneficial, and economically viable management of the world’s forests. Tencel® is fully biodegradable.
Benefits of this fabric include:
- Moisture control: Tencel® absorbs moisture 50% better than cotton, and then releases it outside and away from the skin.
- Smooth softness: Tencel® has a significantly smoother fiber surface than cotton or wool, giving it an appreciable softness that feels good and prevents irritation.
- Anti-bacteria: Moisture management properties restrict the bacterial growth exhibited in many polyester and polypropylene garments.
Modal® is soft. Super soft. Extracted from beech trees, our modal fabrics originate from sustainably-managed forests in Austria and neighboring countries. A significantly more durable and environmentally-friendly type of rayon, Modal® keeps its shape and color over time.
Benefits of this fiber include:
- Superior softness: Soft, softer, softest.
- Moisture control: Modal® absorbs moisture 50% better than cotton, and then releases it outside and away from the skin.
- Durable: Excellent fiber strength, even when wet.
Making clothing that is as versatile as possible is a core commitment at Royal Robbins. Garments made from our performance blend fabrics work just as well in the outdoors as in environments that call for you to be pulled together.
Benefits of these fabrics include:
- UPF protection
- Quick dry
- Wrinkle resistence
Our favorite performance blends include:
The Swiss Army knife of fabrics, Discovery is an adaptable, easy care fabric that is engineered for solid performance with a pulled together and polished look. This nylon and spandex blend is designed for a natural texture and is highly durable, with a great stretch and UPF 50+. Discovery garments are lightweight and wrinkle-resistant, making them ideal for travel.
We blend cotton for comfort, polyester for a quick dry and nylon for strength to create our Convoy fabric for shorts and pants. This light-weight, wrinkle-resistant fabric has a soft “peached” surface and a subtle woven texture so that garments not only stand up to movement and the outdoors, but fit right in at a meeting or dinner.
Our Diablo fabric brings superior ventilation and performance without that “technical” look. By blending polyester with renewably-sourced Sorona® fibers for increased softness and durability, Diablo delivers a polished, pulled-together appearance with wrinkle resistance, a quick dry, UPF protection, and engineered ventilation panels at the chest and back. With an easy stretch to keep its shape, Diablo garments pack well and travel light.
The Royal Robbins story began as a love affair with 100% cotton. Over the years we’ve added other fibers that support the Go Everywhere lifestyle, but cotton has been a constant from the beginning because of its natural comfort and wearability. We make clothing from 100% cotton or we blend it with synthetic fibers for added stretch and durability. We pre-launder our cotton garments to add softness and minimize stretch.
They say that cotton is the fabric of our lives, and as a natural fiber, nothing beats it. Royal Robbins’ organic cotton is grown using methods and materials that have a low environmental impact.
Organic production systems replenish and maintain soil fertility, reduce the use of toxic and persistent pesticides and fertilizers, and build biologically diverse agriculture. Third-party certification organizations verify that organic producers use only methods and materials allowed in organic production. Organic cotton is grown without the use of toxic and persistent pesticides and synthetic fertilizers.
Our favorite cotton classics include:
- Cool Mesh
A Royal Robbins warm weather favorite for over thirty years, Cool Mesh is an open-weave, all-cotton fabric that naturally ventilates. Lightweight and packable, with a subtle texture and just the right amount of give, Cool Mesh is pre-washed for softness and shape retention.
- Organic Cotton
Royal Robbins’ organic cotton is sourced and grown to minimize its environmental impact by replenishing and maintaining soil fertility, reducing the use of toxic pesticides and fertilizers, and supporting biologically diverse agriculture. Our third-party certified organic cotton is grown without the use of toxic pesticides and synthetic fertilizers.
OTHER ECO-CONSCIOUS / NATURAL FABRICS AND FIBERS
When we set out to design a new garment, we concern ourselves with more than how will look or function; we also consider how it will affect the environment, and thereby the quality of our lives.
Royal Robbins’ recycled polyester fabric is a 100% post-consumer, recycled raw material. The polyester fiber is made from recycled soda, water, and food containers. We blend it with other fibers for comfort, easy care, and durability.
Using recycled polyester lessens our dependence on petroleum as a raw material source. It prevents toxic emissions from landfills and incinerators. It helps promote new recycling streams for polyester clothing that is no longer wearable. And it causes less air, water, and soil contamination compared to using non-recycled polyester.
We use hemp because bottom line, it’s one of the most durable natural fibers on the planet and results in clothing that looks and feels great. Easily combined with other fibers, hemp gives garments a linen-like drape and breathability. We blend hemp with organic cotton for a lighter weight, or nylon and polyester for greater strength and faster dry time.
Made from the fibers of the flax plant, linen has been in continuous use for thousands of years because of its cool, fresh and breathable quality. Linen doesn’t cling to the body, even when damp, so air moves through, keeping your skin cool and the garment dry. A tremendous fabric for hot and humid conditions, we blend ours with cotton, for softness and a gentle stretch, or rayon, for increased softness and drape.
UPF protection is important to us. While not all of our garments feature UPF protection, it is a key feature of our core items because, quite simply, we need to protect our skin.
The Ultraviolet Protection Factor (UPF) rating system measures the UV protection provided by fabric. UPF is similar to SPF (Sun Protection Factor) ratings for sunscreen.
A garment with a UPF of 50 only allows 1/50th of the UV radiation falling on the surface of the garment to pass through it. In other words, it allows 2% of the UV rays to pass through the garment and it blocks 98% of the UV radiation. The higher the UPF rating, the lower the amount of UV rays will reach your skin. Wearing a UPF fabric greatly reduces your exposure to UV rays.
