September 23, 2012 0Please bring back the heavy canvas-type cotton Billy Goat short. Nylon isn't close and a model I will not buy.

August 4, 2011 1Yes I also read all the comments!BEFORE I ordered these shorts again. I needed new ones as I have used the more than six pair (in all the colors) I have worn for many years...and really enjoyed. I thought "how bad can they really be, after all Royal Robbins has been better than any other supplier for shorts." My verdict...the new ones should not be labeled "original" they are an extremely poor imitation! Not worthy of the RR identity (maybe Target). I immediately returned them! I did order the longer shorts with the "cargo" pockets since I needed some kind of shorts. Even though they are too ling for my taste and the expansion pleats on the pockets snag on drawer knobs. The Hydro shorts are okay for now, but I IMPLORE you to return to the cotton canvas "Original Billy Goat Short."

July 9, 2011 1So sad... You tried this once before, about ten years ago... I've been wearing Billy Goat Shorts for about 25 years. The ORIGINAL was made of heavy cotton, almost canvas, and was even shorter than the previous model. About ten years ago you went to a lighter cotton, and longer leg, Then, you changed he leg length, but kept the lighter cotton... I continued to buy them, but now... Sorry, I don't wear nylon. Don't care for the longer leg length, and hate the "new" look.
Why would you change such a great product??? -

July 3, 2011 2Yet another soon to be former Royal Robbins customer. The original was a fantastic short - Casual but classy. The new one, not so. Sorry, but not all of us want to look like clam-diggers. Bring back the originals.

June 27, 2011 1WHAT!?!?! No Original Billy Goats? I've been wearing them all day, everyday for 20 years and there's nothing better. I'll look elsewhere until they bring the ORIGINAL back. A serious marketing error!

June 16, 2011 2I didn't want to weigh in until I actually had worn the new Billy Goats. Here are my thoughts:
The new nylon "canvas" is cooler in hot weather, but am I not alone in liking Billy Goats because you could wear them when it was "not quite warm enough yet" to switch from long pants to shorts?
The extra inch of inseam is OK, since the more-supple nylon "rides up."
I'm glad you retained the metal zipper (as opposed to-- yuck-- nylon) and the metal clasp (as opposed to a sewn-in button-- sure to come unsewn after one season). But putting the closure on a TAB interferes with the (ahem) "operation" of the zipper.
The new mesh pockets: BAD idea. I'm sure they won't be as durable as the old cotton-shirting pockets; and when the mesh rips, it'll be about impossible to patch.
WHAT, folks, were you thinking? -

May 30, 2011 1I just found out from previous reviews that the original is dead. I can't express how upset I am. This has been my short of choice for 13 years. I don't know quite what to do now without them. Until they RR brings the original Billy Goat back i will not buy a single RR product. Hopefully someone who makes these types of decisions is reading this!

May 25, 2011 3Well I have not been a "lifelong" customer you could say so yeah maybe im not as clinging to the old pair.In fact I just started wearing them last year. The short inseam is good and cotton has always been tagged as Durable.Nothing last though neither cotton after awile of washing it tears up at the zipper its strong but not invincable. I think that we will find that the new ones will be just fine.Im not dissing or ditching RR just becuase they changed thread thats stupid. Its like the kid who wouldnt go down the big slide yea its diferen than the small one but a couple of times going down and he realizes hey this aint that bad.Now cold or hot rain or shine nylon or cotton im gonna get billy goat shorts.

May 16, 2011 1Sigh... Another example of "improving" an already terrific product gone badly. You've taken the marvelous Billy Goat classic short and attached that name to a mediocre piece of dreck. It doesn't fit as well (too long), and is made of nylon. Fifteen years, the original "goat" has been my only brand. Maybe someone knows where I can get something as good.

May 9, 2011 1I have to add my severe disappointment in finding that you no longer make the original cotton canvas Billy Goat Short. I have used these for as long as I can remember and loved them. I wear no other shorts and I have no interest in a nylon version. If you do not bring back the cotton canvas, I guess I'll be switching to another manufacturer who makes a product similar to your original cotton canvas Billy Goat Shorts.

April 23, 2011 1Ditto on the previous comments. I've been a fan of Royal Robbins for a long time and regularly bought the original cotton Billy Goat shorts for over 20 years, just after the company was born In my opinion they were the best hiking shorts available. Discontinuing them is a sorry marketing decision.

March 12, 2011 1Same comments as the previous two. I was a customer, now I'm not. Bring back the original canvas ones. If the cotton price is the problem, I'd happily pay more if the originals were available.
If this is the idea of some worthless marketing droid, please fire him/her. -

March 1, 2011 1I am no longer a Royal Robbins customer. Not out of protest, but because the one item I did buy from RR is no longer available. That's a shame. I usually bought 3 new pairs each spring, but I guess that will no longer happen. These were the only shorts I wore besides Patagonia Baggies. Speaking of Patagonia and the Baggies shorts, they tried this very same thing last year and it did not go over well with their clientele. There was tremendous backlash for changing such a classic and well-loved product. Needless to say, they went back to the original design this year. Maybe RR could learn a thing or two. Guess I'll be wearing my old Billy Goats and searching for long term replacements in the mean time.

February 19, 2011 1Disappointed!!!!I have purchased Billy Goat shorts now for over 10 years but will never again have a pair. The only style of shorts I wear is dead. There is nothing "original" about these except the general pattern. The cut different, the fabric is now nylon, the inseam is longer. How can these be called something they are not. So much for me being a Royal Robbins buyer from now on. Totally let down by this change. I would pay 60.00 a pair if the price of cotton is to blame for this major fail in my book. I hope this gets posted as is. I will bet i am not the only one out there. Time to scrounge for a real pair of Billy Goats on ebay.
